How We Modernized Our Own Website (and What It Means for Yours)

By SiteMilk  ·

SiteMilk is a website modernization studio. We take dated, hard-to-use small-business websites and make them fresh again — same brand, modern build. But before we ever touched a client's site, we pointed the process at ourselves. This is the honest story of how we modernized our own website, and why the same playbook is exactly what most small businesses need.

The SiteMilk mascot — recovered from the original 2014 brand.

A brand that went quiet

SiteMilk started around 2010 as a small web design and hosting business. It built sites, pointed domains, and kept a few servers humming — the everyday plumbing of getting a business online. Then, like a lot of side ventures, it went dormant around 2013. The domain slipped into a quiet corner of the internet and the brand sat on a shelf for the better part of a decade.

What made reviving it worthwhile wasn't nostalgia. It was that the original idea still held up.

What we found in the archive

When we reopened the box, the 2014 brand assets were better than we remembered. There was the mascot — a friendly glass of milk with a chocolate-chip cookie climbing in — and a tagline that still makes us smile: "Milk for the internet — because the web is full of cookies." There was a "Get Milk" call to action, a cheeky "Fat-Free" hosting plan at $3.95/mo, and the piece we're proudest of: a "Modernization Facts" graphic styled like the nutrition label on a milk carton.

That last one mattered. It said something true about how a website should be sold: you should be able to read the ingredients. Most small-business owners have no idea what's actually inside their site. The label was our way of printing it on the carton.

The identity was strong. The execution was 2014. That gap — good brand, dated delivery — is the exact situation we now fix for other businesses. So we treated our own revival as client number one and ran our standard process on it.

The process (the same one we'd run for you)

1. Audit the old site. We started by being honest about the problems. The original site was dated, it wasn't built for phones, and by the time we came back it was effectively dead. That's the trifecta we see constantly: a site that looks old, breaks on mobile, and quietly does nothing for the business.

2. Build a design system from the brand you already have. We didn't reinvent SiteMilk. We kept the mascot, the milk metaphor, the "Get Milk" button, and the Modernization Facts label. What we modernized was everything underneath: clean typography (Poppins and Work Sans), a tighter palette built around milk white, cream, navy, and a fresh sky blue, and consistent spacing. The goal of a website redesign is never to erase your identity — it's to make it work in the current decade.

3. Rebuild it as a fast, responsive site. The new sitemilk.com is a single-page, mobile-first build. It loads quickly, reflows cleanly from desktop to phone, and drops the outdated code that used to weigh sites down. No Flash, no bloat, no ancient plugins waiting to break.

4. Deploy on modern cloud hosting. We put the site on Firebase, a modern cloud host, with automatic SSL so it's secure by default — the padlock, free, renewing itself. No server to babysit.

5. Wire up the real domain and business email. Finally we connected the actual sitemilk.com custom domain and set up business email, so the brand has a proper front door and a real address (milkman@sitemilk.com) instead of a placeholder.

None of these steps are exotic. That's the point. Modernization isn't a moonshot — it's a handful of well-executed fundamentals.

Reading our own label

Here's how the finished site scores on its own Modernization Facts:

If you can read the label, you know what you're getting. Your site should offer the same clarity.

What this means for your website

Here's the part that matters for you, whether you run a plumbing company in Tampa or a bakery three states over.

Your website is the first thing a customer checks. Before they call, before they book, before they trust you with a job, they look you up — usually on a phone, usually for about ten seconds. If what loads is slow, dated, or broken on that small screen, they don't email you to complain. They just quietly move on to the next result. A tired website doesn't earn you a bad review; it costs you the jobs you never hear about.

The encouraging news is that fixing it rarely means starting over. Most businesses we work with already have a real brand — a logo, a reputation, a look their customers recognize. Modernizing keeps all of that. A good website redesign takes the identity you've earned and rebuilds the delivery so it's fast, mobile-friendly, and current. We did it to ourselves without throwing out a single thing that made SiteMilk feel like SiteMilk.
